Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to:

Identify recommended treatment goals for type 2 diabetes and other components of cardiometabolic syndrome risk profile
Explain stratification methods for determining increased cardiometabolic risk based on non-glycemic issues, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity
Identify and use specific interventional triggers to initiate preventive interventions in various cardiometabolic factors in a timely manner
Demonstrate methods to advance non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies for type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic risk factors when recommended treatment goals are not met
Summarize indications for, and use of, non-pharmacologic as well as pharmacologic interventions targeting type 2 diabetes and other components of cardiometabolic syndrome

Glenn Matfin, MSc (Oxford), MB, ChB, FACE, FACP, FRCP

Dr. Glenn Matfin is a Senior Physician at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston; and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Endocrinologist at the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine, USA.

Dr. Matfin trained in Endocrinology in Newcastle and London in the UK, as well as at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. Dr. Matfin was previously a Consultant Diabetologist in the UK National Health Service.

From June 1999 until January 2008, Dr. Matfin worked as a Clinical Trialist in the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology sectors and rose to the level of Global Head and Vice-President, Medical and Scientific Affairs. Dr. Matfin personally led or designed more than 100 clinical trials involving more than a 100,000 subjects. These studies included all phases (i.e. 1-4) and several mega-studies (more than 10). His major research interests are in type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and its cardiovascular complications. In addition, Dr. Matfin has a Certificate in R&D Strategy from Wharton Business School; and was responsible for >$1 Billion R&D spending in various pharmaceutical roles during the last 10 years.

He has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE); Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP); Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (FFPM); and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP). Dr. Matfin also has a Master of Science (MSc) in Experimental Therapeutics from the University of Oxford, UK.

Dr. Matfin has published more than 190 scientific articles and book chapters. He is a Clinical Editor at the British Medical Journal Group; as well as being on the Editorial Board for British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease (BJDVD) and Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety; National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme Referee, UK; and is also Editor-in-Chief of Therapeutic Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr Matfin is also Co-Editor of the popular textbook, Pathophysiology: concepts of altered health, 8^th edition, LWW.
