Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize glucose patterns as a reflection of pathophysiology and treatment efficacy in type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  2. Assess patients for self-monitoring of blood glucose need and ability, including selection of monitoring hardware and checking schedule and pattern interpretation expectations
  3. Explain the relevant technical, clinical, and educational issues when instructing a patient in the use of glucose monitoring equipment and glucose pattern interpretation
  4. Describe the indications for, and advantages of, insulin pens in the treatment of diabetes
  5. Identify the clinical approach and educational needs for the initiation of insulin pen use in the treatment of diabetes, as well as the ongoing support for pen use including response to questions and troubleshooting issues
  6. Instruct a patient in the use of glucose monitoring equipment and glucose pattern interpretation, addressing important technical, clinical, and educational issues
  7. Develop in-office and/or referral support for the education and management of insulin pen use
