Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the natural history of type 2 diabetes including the evolution of insulin resistance and insulin secretory decline as key factors in the clinical progression of the disease
- Translate the process of selecting and advancing treatment regimens that balance physiologic needs with individualized self-care considerations for type 2 diabetes into the outpatient setting via improved and coordinated systems of care
- Identify the most common medical, personal, social, and cultural factors that influence adherence to diabetes treatment plans
- Recognize the value of motivational interviewing as a potential strategy to improve provider-patient interaction in the clinical setting
- Employ appropriate tests and data collection to assist in the management of people with diabetes who are not achieving their targeted treatment goals
- Integrate a comprehensive treatment plan for people with diabetes that includes nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions that are based on individual medical, social, and cultural factors
- Formulate and implement office-based systems to manage treatment and facilitate therapeutic advancement
